A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
