Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
