Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
