Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these medications need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
