PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the prestigious trophy on fourteen different times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side struck twice in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the final moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to complete a 4-1 penalty victory.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 seasons.
