The world is under pressure, but optimism persists. A new award originating at the science, music and arts festival the Starmus festival aims to inspire individuals to make a difference.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name is to be awarded in memory of the renowned British primatologist who died this year. It will recognise those who champion life on Earth.

Award Details

Initial honorees are expected to be announced at the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, scheduled from 17–22 October the coming year.

Reports indicate that Goodall, who was a member of the festival's board, had endorsed the award’s creation. “The concept behind this medal, and the festival being tasked to oversee it, was Jane's wish,” a statement said. “She expressed that she wanted for this to occur. And I think due to the very special bond she had with us.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will recognize ongoing initiatives carried out to make our world improved for all living beings and ecosystems and foster motivation to carry on such efforts,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of the festival stated that the medal – which was announced at a prestigious venue – will likely encompass various fields.

“The intent is for it to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking award honoring scientific outreach established exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Goodall was an honoree of that award.

Expressing concern about the future of the planet, one figure said, “To be truthful, it’s very hard to maintain optimism. Certain policies globally represents a dismissal of evidence. This situation significantly hampers global initiatives.”

“In truth, the prospects aren't particularly bright therefore we must commence reflecting, much more seriously about the consequences of human activity. And that’s not only climate change, but also the entire manner in which we interact with our environment.”

Inspiring Change

As a result, it was noted this is an opportune moment to emulate her guiding principles. “It is believed that when we’re awarding this medal, we will be considering this essential spirit of Jane’s – that was her foremost concern, to change the way we treat fellow creatures with which we share the planet.”

A pressing concern currently was highlighted of false information. The theme of the upcoming festival is set as “the search for truth”.

“We realised that truth is becoming a matter of debate where political interests are involved. And it’s a very dangerous thing,” it was said. “Climate research remains a scientific discipline; you cannot allow interference by political agendas in climate science.”

Hope and Determination

The goal remains that the medal will spur positive change. “It’s about inspiring individuals to participate and to care and to work toward these goals, really. Whether or not we feel hopeful, we must look at working all that is possible,” it was added. “Be prepared for failure, yet we must have to work to achieve positive outcomes.”

A descendant involved in environmental protection shared hope that “with guidance and once enabled, humanity are capable of being diligent stewards of our planet”, citing the work of an institute which, in addition to its projects, empowers the next generation get involved with their community, animals, and the natural world.

“As Jane Goodall repeatedly told everyone, our daily actions have an impact and it is up to us what type of impact we make,” it was stated. “We still have an opportunity and this medal will give encouragement and raise awareness about beneficial initiatives currently in progress.”
