Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the ability to challenge particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
